ലണ്ടനെയും കൊൽക്കത്തയെയും ബന്ധിപ്പിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ഭൂഖണ്ഡങ്ങളിലൂടെ 50 ദിവസം നീണ്ടുനിന്ന ഒരു ഇതിഹാസ ബസ് യാത്ര. ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് കിലോമീറ്ററുകൾ താണ്ടിയ ഈ യാത്ര ചരിത്രത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും ശ്രദ്ധേയമായ റോഡ് യാത്രകളിൽ ഒന്നായി മാറി.
ഡൽഹി മുതൽ ഋഷികേശ് വരെയുള്ള യാത്ര ഒരു വലിയ റോഡ് ട്രിപ്പായി നിങ്ങൾക്ക് തോന്നുന്നുണ്ടോ? എങ്കിൽ പതിറ്റാണ്ടുകൾക്ക് മുമ്പ്, യാത്രക്കാർക്ക് ലണ്ടനിൽ നിന്ന് ബസ് കയറി ഏകദേശം 17,000 കിലോമീറ്റർ ദൂരം പിന്നിട്ട്, 50 ദിവസം കൊണ്ട് കൊൽക്കത്തയിൽ എത്താമായിരുന്നു.

ലണ്ടൻ-കൽക്കട്ട ബസ് സർവീസ്
‘ആൽബർട്ട് ട്രാവൽ’ (Albert Travel) എന്ന ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് യാത്രാ കമ്പനി ആരംഭിച്ച ലണ്ടൻ–കൽക്കട്ട ബസ് സർവീസ്, യൂറോപ്പിനെയും ഏഷ്യയെയും റോഡ് മാർഗ്ഗം ബന്ധിപ്പിക്കാൻ ലക്ഷ്യമിട്ടുള്ളതായിരുന്നു. ഇതിന്റെ ആദ്യ യാത്ര 1957 ഏപ്രിൽ 15-ന് ആരംഭിച്ച് ജൂൺ 5-ന് കൊൽക്കത്തയിൽ എത്തിച്ചേർന്നു.

ആഡംബര സജ്ജീകരണങ്ങൾ
ഒരു സാധാരണ ബസ്സിൽ നിന്നും തികച്ചും വ്യത്യസ്തമായി, ഉറങ്ങാനുള്ള ബർത്തുകൾ (sleeping berths), വായനാ മുറികൾ, ഫാൻ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്ന ഹീറ്റിംഗ് സംവിധാനം, കൂടാതെ എല്ലാ സജ്ജീകരണങ്ങളുമുള്ള ഒരു അടുക്കള എന്നിവയും ഈ വാഹനത്തിൽ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ബസ്സിന്റെ മുകൾത്തട്ടിലുള്ള ഒബ്സർവേഷൻ ലോഞ്ച് (observation lounge) യാത്രക്കാർക്ക് വഴിനീളെ മനോഹരമായ കാഴ്ചകൾ ആസ്വദിക്കാൻ അവസരമൊരുക്കി.

ഇന്ത്യയിൽ എത്തുന്നതിന് മുമ്പ് ഈ റൂട്ട് നിരവധി രാജ്യങ്ങളിലൂടെയും സംസ്കാരങ്ങളിലൂടെയും കടന്നുപോയി. ഇസ്താംബുൾ, ടെഹ്റാൻ, വിയന്ന, സാൽസ്ബർഗ്, കാബൂൾ തുടങ്ങിയ പ്രശസ്തമായ നഗരങ്ങളിൽ ഇറങ്ങി അവ പര്യവേക്ഷണം ചെയ്യാൻ യാത്രക്കാർക്ക് കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു. ഇത് ജീവിതത്തിലൊരിക്കൽ മാത്രം ലഭിക്കുന്ന ഒരു യാത്രാനുഭവമായി മാറി. പിന്നീട് ഈ ബസ് ആൻഡി സ്റ്റുവാർട്ട് (Andy Stewart) എന്ന ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് സഞ്ചാരി സ്വന്തമാക്കുകയും ‘ആൽബർട്ട്’ എന്ന് പേരിട്ട ഒരു ഡബിൾ ഡെക്കർ മൊബൈൽ ഹോം (മൊബൈൽ വീട്) ആക്കി മാറ്റുകയും ചെയ്തു. ലണ്ടൻ, കൊൽക്കത്ത, സിഡ്നി എന്നിവയെ ബന്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്ന പുതിയ റൂട്ടുകളും ഇതിലൂടെ നിലവിൽ വന്നു. ഒരാൾക്ക് ഏകദേശം £145 (പൗണ്ട്) ആയിരുന്നു അന്ന് ടിക്കറ്റ് നിരക്ക്. Launched by British travel company Albert Travel, the London–Calcutta Bus Service aimed to connect Europe and Asia by road. Its first journey began on April 15, 1957, and arrived in Kolkata on June 5. (Image-Youtube/@TIJ 2328)
Far from an ordinary coach, the vehicle offered sleeping berths, reading areas, fan-operated heating, and a fully equipped kitchen. An observation lounge on the upper deck allowed passengers to enjoy spectacular views throughout the trip. (Image-X/VloggerCalcutt)
